Amblyopia, Lazy Eye and School

Child face

The authors of a clinical study concluded that treating amblyopia before entering formal schooling is a good idea because of amblyopia’s effect on peer-to-peer interactions and subsequent self-perception by the child with amblyopia.

First- and second-grade students with AMBLYOPIA in the clinical study showed significantly LOWER SELF-PERCEPTION OF PHYSICAL COMPETENCE as well as significantly LOWER PEER ACCEPTANCE than those children without amblyopia. In other words, the children with amblyopia thought more lowly of their own physical abilities and were less likely to be well-accepted by their peers.

Amblyopia is the most common cause of visual impairment in children. 2 to 3 children out of every 100 have this condition. Amblyopia is an inability to see 20/20 despite wearing glasses and not having an organic eye disease. Active therapy is the best way to develop two eyes that work well together in synchrony. Patching alone will not accomplish this goal.

ADHD and Vision

In a national survey involving more than 75,000 children across all fifty states, children WITH VISION PROBLEMS not correctable with glasses or contacts were 2X’s MORE LIKELY to be diagnosed with ADHD than children without vision problems not correctable with glasses or contacts. Interestingly, in another study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than 40% of the children MEDICATED for ADHD actually met the formal criteria set forth in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition for diagnosing ADHD. In other words, potentially more than half of those kids who were being medicated did not even have ADHD. No one knows the exact cause of ADHD. Even the diagnosis of ADHD can be murky. Symptoms of ADHD and other conditions, including vision problems, can be strikingly similar. Does a child who is being medicated for ADHD actually need all of that medication, or does he/she have a different condition? That is a question that needs to be looked into further for every child thought to have ADHD.

Amblyopia or Lazy Eye

amblyopia sugar land tx eye doctor sugar land kids eye doctor sugar land vision therapy sugar land child eye exam near meClinical studies indicate that children with amblyopia suffer from the following:

• Slower reading speed
• Worse fine motor skills
• Lower self-perception

Amblyopia is a condition in which the eyes are physically healthy, but because of an amblyogenic factor – high prescription, unequal prescription, form deprivation or strabismus – the eye never develops 20/20 eyesight. Consequently, amblyopia may hamper a child’s ability to showcase their knowledge, compete in physical activities and/or interact well socially.

If a child sees significantly better in one eye than another, then that child may be at risk for amblyopia. Active therapy is the best route to help the child develop use of both eyes in order to see comfortably and accurately. Patching will not accomplish that goal. We specialize in pediatric vision including amblyopia.

Dyslexia and Vision

In a clinical study comparing the visual skills in students with developmental dyslexia versus those in normal readers, the authors concluded that “deficits in visual function [were] far more prevalent in school-aged children with developmental dyslexia than in typically developing readers”. Nearly 80% of children with developmental dyslexia suffered from visual skills dysfunction.

If your child is struggling with reading, it is imperative that you have his/her visual skills thoroughly evaluated. A yearly eye exam will not investigate these areas of the visual system. We specialize in visual skills that affect reading, writing and learning.

Blue Light Protection Link

Scientists from the University of Toledo have discovered a reason behind why blue light damages retinal cells. Blue light activates a specific protein in the back of the eye. Activating this protein is like pressing a start button that initiates a chain of events that eventually leads to cell death. This, in turn, leads to an increased risk for macular degeneration.

Blue light protection should safeguard against ALL areas of blue light risk. A patient of ours recently told us about a colleague of his who was excited about his new blue light protection. This patient wanted to know whether this was something that he should try. We helped him look up the technical data of his friend’s blue light protection. His friend’s blue light protection only provided coverage for about 20% of the blue light range whereas what he was using with us provided safety against the entire range without sacrificing performance. Not all blue light protection is the same.

Dyslexia, Reading Disability and Vision

Students who experience the following vision-related symptoms were shown to have more academic difficulties according to a clinical study involving elementary school children:

• Headaches with near work
• Words running together when reading
• Burning, itching or watery eyes
• Skipping/repeating lines when reading
• Head tilt/closing one eye when reading
• Difficulty copying from the board
• Avoiding near work/reading
• Omitting small words when reading
• Writing uphill or downhill
• Misaligning digits in columns
• Holds reading materials too closely
• Trouble maintaining attention when reading
• Difficulty completing assignments on time
• Always says, “I can’t” even before trying
• Clumsy, knocks things over
• Loses things/belongings
• Forgetful/poor memory

If a child is struggling at school and he/she is experiencing any of the above, then a visual skills evaluation would be recommended. A routine eye exam would not uncover undiagnosed visual skills problems that may be contributing to that child’s academic struggles.

Overlooked Risks at School

Dangers of Blue Light Sugar Land TX Optometrist Eye Doctor Exam Fort Bend ISD Technology Center Back to School

Aside from backpacks, pencils, papers and other school supplies, have you also provided protection for your child from the long-term environmental dangers lurking in classrooms and hallways? Digital light and energy-efficient lighting in schools increase risks for macular degeneration, eyestrain, sleep disturbances and cataracts. Clinical studies, in fact, indicate that children absorb more of this harmful light. Symptoms of eyestrain include sore and irritated eyes and difficulty focusing.
